Car windshield minor repair

Our windshield gets hit by rocks and debris as we drive down the road every day.  Every once in a while, we will experience a minor chip or crack.  Most windshield repair shop will tell you that you need to immediately get it replace because the chip will continue to grow.  Otherwise say you need to place some tape over the crack so that if it breaks, it won’t scatter all over you.  Well the truth is – if the chip or crack is very small you can repair it yourself for $20 to $50 depending on which product you buy from the local car repair shop.  To do this successfully, you need to do it as soon as possible so that dirty and other particles do not build up and damage the area.  Most expert say that if the damage is more than one inch in diameter than you need to see a professional or get the entire windshield replaced.

So the way it work is you inject resin into the damage area using disposal syringes.  In thirty minutes the resin dries and that is it.  How easy can that be?

Body Shop questions

After you have narrowed your search and determine the ones that you want to take your car to, you will need to ask them some important questions:

  • Do you have experience handling the make/model of my car?
  • Will I get a rental car and who pays for it?
  • Do you have experience working with my insurance carrier?
  • How long does a repair take?
  • Can I track the progress of the repairs online?
  • Will you contact my insurance company and take care of all the paper work and payment?
  • What kind of training and certifications do your technicians have?
  • Will I be able to track the progress of my repair online and/or will you keep me updated on a regular basis?
  • What kind of technology do you use in your shop?

Get several estimates

Its never fun getting ripped off.  You just got into a car accident and that last thing you need is to spend more money that you never anticipated spending on.  So take your car to several body shops for repair quotes.  After you get a few estimates, bring the estimate with you to the next shop.  Tell them what you were quoted and see if they can match or beat that price.  At the same time stay away from the guy that will beat any price.  Anything that sounds too cheap is probably too good to be true.  So decide upon the one that is right in the middle because that is probably the right price that you should be paying to fix your car.

Protecting your car paint

One of the most prize part of one’s car is the paint job.  Maintaining that pretty coat can be difficult.  The best way to do this is to apply either a wax or sealer on your car’s coat.  Both types of products will protect your paint against moisture, ozone and ultraviolet. Sealers, which are typically petroleum based and contain silicones, usually last much longer (up to a year or more) than ordinary wax. But most waxes contain silicone so you will be fine using either.
You apply the wax or sealer by rubbing it on your car.  However, before you can apply the wax or sealer, you need to first wash and dry your car.  Don’t wax it in the heat of the sun.  Do it in the shade.  Use a clean, soft, damp rag t apply the wax or sealer.  Apply it in small area.  Let it dry before wipping and buffing.  Work on small areas and move on as you finish each area.  Don’t work in large area.

Car Battery

This is a topic that you rarely think about until you need one.  And when you do, it usually because its an emergency and you can’t start your car so you take whenever available to get your car going again.  If you have the luxury to go to the store and pick out what you need here are a few things to know.  Not all batteries are the same.  Some are better than others.  It all depends on what you need.  Here is our pick of the best car batteries:

  1. Kirkland Signature
  2. Everstart
  3. AC Delco
  4. Duralast
  5. DieHard
  6. NAPA Car Battery
  7. Optima

The Kirkland Signature won out because has good amp rating, high performance at a very good price.

Body shop

A body shop is a place or garage where people take their automotive vehicles to get repair. Typically the type of repairs needed are to the body of the car and to the frame of the car.  Whereas a car mechanic is one where you take your car to to repair the engine, transmission and moving parts of the car.  When you have damage to the structural parts of your car, you need to go to a body shop.  I hope that clears things up for everyone.

BMW Key Battery

If you have a relatively new BMW then you don’t really have to worry about replacing the batter in your key.  Every time you plug your keys into the ignition, it charges the battery in your key.   However, there is a thing called batter life which means that over time the battery life breaks down and can’t stay charge as long.   The newer remotes do not offer removable batters there you will not be able to change the new BMW key battery.

In the older models, changing the batter is very easy.  All you need to do is turn over the keys and look at the back of the key.  There should be a small latch on the back of the remote.  On some remotes the latch is help by some screws.  Remove the screws and remove the back cover.  Then take out the old batter and replace it with a new battery.  Then put the latch back on and you are good to good.  Easy wasn’t it?

No insurance pressure

If you get into a car accident and you need to get your car fix, don’t let your insurance company tell you where to go to get it fix.  Insurance companies are not supposed to force you to use their body shop.  They can provide you with a list of body shop that they recommend based on past experience.  This is one way to get a list of body shop to consider to decide who you want to fix your car.  But once again its up to you who you ultimately decide on and not the insurance company so don’t listen to them and don’t let them pressure you into using any one place.  Its fine that they tell you to bring the car to a designated shop to do the estimate and to see the damage but you don’t have to leave your car there and let them do the final repairs.

Like anything in life.  Take your time and make a informed decision.  Do let pressure get into the equation.  Any time someone is pressuring you to do something its always a good idea to take a step back and reconsider what they are asking you to do.  Especially with insurance companies.
